Fort Ancient

Fort Ancient

Description :

Fort Ancient Earthworks & Nature Preserve is a 2,000-year-old, human-made earthworks enclosure located on a wooded bluff above the Little Miami River. Comprised of nearly 3 1/2 miles of earthen walls that were constructed over a 400 year period, Fort Ancient features mounds, stone pavements, crescent-shaped gateways, and remnants of a woodhenge that were designed to align with both the summer and winter solstices. In Sept. 2023 Fort Ancient and seven other earthworks sites in Ohio became the first UNESCO World Heritage site in the state. The site features a Museum spanning 15,000 years of Ohio history that includes a small meeting space, as well as a prehistoric-themed garden, scenic trails, overlooks, and picnic opportunities.
